Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly during the first two seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and handles Maltese heat well. For potted trees, water deeply whenever the top few centimeters of soil dry out completely.
☀️ Light
It requires full, direct sunlight to produce its signature fiery red flowers. Ensure it gets at least six hours of sun daily. Too much shade will reduce the amount of blooms and make the plant susceptible to powdery mildew.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
New leaves emerge a beautiful bronze-red, mature to dark green, and turn vibrant orange-red before dropping in winter. It has a neat, upright growth habit and smooth, exfoliating bark. Cut it back heavily in late winter to encourage massive summer flower clusters.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in rich, moist, and sharply draining soil. It adapts well to Malta’s alkaline soils, but prefers a neutral to slightly acidic mix. If planting in containers, use a large, heavy pot with excellent drainage holes.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen mixes, as this will trigger excessive leaf growth at the expense of summer blooms.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
It is completely non-toxic to dogs and cats. This makes it a perfectly safe, worry-free feature tree for pet-friendly gardens and patios.
🌬️ Air Purifying
As a robust outdoor tree, its summer canopy provides excellent cooling shade for hot terraces. The large, nectar-rich flower clusters are also highly attractive to local bees and butterflies.
