Description

Kiwi ‘Hayward’ (Actinidia deliciosa) is a vigorous female climbing vine that produces the familiar large, oval kiwi fruits with fuzzy brown skin and juicy green flesh. It requires a compatible male kiwi, such as ‘Tomuri’, flowering at the same time nearby for pollination and good fruit production.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, particularly while the vine is establishing and while fruit is developing. Kiwi plants have relatively high water requirements and should not be allowed to dry out for prolonged periods. In Malta, regular deep watering is especially important throughout the hot, dry spring and summer months.

Mulching around the root zone helps conserve moisture and keep the roots cooler, but avoid keeping the soil permanently waterlogged.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun to light partial shade. Plenty of sunlight supports flowering and fruit ripening, but in Malta some protection from the strongest afternoon summer heat can be beneficial, particularly for young or container-grown vines. A sheltered position also helps protect new growth from strong winds.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

‘Hayward’ is a vigorous deciduous climber with large, heart-shaped green leaves. Creamy-white female flowers appear in spring and, when successfully pollinated by a compatible male plant, develop into fuzzy brown kiwi fruits that mature later in the season.

Provide a strong pergola, trellis, or wire system capable of supporting the considerable weight of a mature vine and its fruit. Regular winter and summer pruning is important for controlling vigorous growth and maintaining productive fruiting wood.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in deep, fertile, organic-rich soil that drains freely while retaining consistent moisture. Kiwi prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions and may struggle in highly alkaline or calcareous soils, which is particularly relevant in Malta. Incorporating plenty of organic matter can improve soil structure and nutrient availability.

🌿 Fertilizer

Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. Fruiting vines benefit from regular nutrition during the growing season, with adequate potassium helping support flower and fruit development. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Kiwi vines are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Some cats are strongly attracted to Actinidia plants and may rub against, chew, or damage the stems and roots, so young vines may require protection.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Kiwi ‘Hayward’ is primarily valued as an edible fruiting vine rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its vigorous leafy canopy is excellent for covering pergolas and providing natural summer shade, while its deciduous habit allows more sunlight through during winter.
