💧 Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth and flowering, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Continue watering as needed while the leaves remain green after flowering. Reduce watering as the foliage yellows, keeping dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.
☀️ Light & Position
Choose a sunny position with good drainage and some shelter from strong winds. In Malta, avoid placing pots against walls that become extremely hot during late spring.
🌿 Feeding
Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue while the foliage remains green after flowering, then stop as it begins to yellow.
🍃 After Flowering
Remove faded flower stems if desired, leaving the leaves intact. Allow the foliage to yellow and dry naturally before removing it.
Bulbs can remain planted where drainage is good and summers are relatively dry. Divide crowded clumps during dormancy when needed.
🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips
Autumn planting allows the bulbs to establish during Malta’s cooler months. Avoid areas that stay wet after winter rain or receive frequent summer irrigation.
Dutch irises grow from bulbs, so plant them below the soil surface rather than leaving them exposed like bearded iris rhizomes.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten. Keep plants and bulbs away from pets that chew plants or dig in the soil.
