Description

Add a touch of dramatic contrast to your garden with the Yellow & Brown Bearded Iris (Iris germanica). This variety features a stunning bicolour effect: bright, sunny yellow upright petals (standards) paired with rich, velvety chestnut-brown lower petals (falls). A bright orange or yellow “beard” sits at the center, completing this magnificent flower’s look.

Key Features for Malta:

Sun-Loving & Drought Tolerant: Like all Iris germanica, this variety thrives in the Maltese climate. It is exceptionally resilient and prefers the dry, sunny conditions found in Mediterranean gardens.

Striking Contrast: The warm earth tones of yellow and brown create a “sunset” effect that looks incredible against stone walls or green shrubs.

Architectural Foliage: Even when not in bloom, the sword-like, grey-green leaves provide a strong structural element to your landscape.

Naturalizing Perennial: These irises are a long-term investment. They grow from sturdy rhizomes that will multiply and produce more flower spikes every year.

Expert Planting Tips for our Customers:

The “Rhizome Exposure” Rule: In our climate, the most common mistake is planting too deep. Ensure the back of the rhizome is visible above the soil line. It needs to “bake” in the Maltese sun to produce flowers.

Drainage is King: Irises will rot if kept in soggy soil. Choose a well-draining spot or improve your soil with some grit if planting in heavy clay.

Spacing for Success: Plant rhizomes approximately 30–45 cm apart. This ensures good airflow around the plants and gives them room to spread.

Minimal Watering: Once established, these irises require very little water, making them perfect for low-maintenance or water-wise gardens.

Seasonal Care: After the spring bloom, remove the spent flower stalks to keep the plant tidy, but let the foliage remain to gather energy for next year.

Color: Bicolour (Bright Yellow Standards / Mahogany Brown Falls).

Position: Full Sun (mandatory for best flowering).

Hardiness: Very Hardy / Perennial.

Bloom Time: Mid to Late Spring (April/May).

Height: 60 – 90 cm.
