Description

Add a touch of majestic beauty to your garden with the Iris germanica Purple. Often called the “King of the Garden,” this Bearded Iris produces large, striking deep-purple blossoms with velvety petals and characteristic fuzzy “beards.” It is one of the most reliable and spectacular perennials for Mediterranean landscapes, offering high drama with very low maintenance.

Key Features for Malta:

Mediterranean Native Heritage: Iris germanica is naturally adapted to sunny, dry climates, making it exceptionally well-suited for the Maltese environment.

Striking Regal Color: The rich, royal purple blooms provide a stunning focal point in late spring and early summer.

Structural Foliage: Even when not in bloom, its sword-like, grey-green foliage provides excellent architectural structure to garden beds year-round.

Drought Tolerant: These plants store water in their thick rhizomes, allowing them to survive long, dry Maltese summers with minimal irrigation once established.

Pollinator Friendly: The large, fragrant blooms are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial garden visitors.

Expert Tips for Growing Bearded Iris in Malta:

Sun is Non-Negotiable: For the best flowers, plant in a spot that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight.

The “Sun-Baked” Secret: When planting the rhizomes, do not bury them completely. The top of the rhizome should be visible at the soil surface. In Malta, the rhizome needs the sun to “bake” it to trigger next year’s flower buds.

Perfect Drainage: Irises hate “wet feet.” Plant them in well-drained soil, perhaps on a slight slope or in a raised bed, to ensure they don’t rot during winter rain.

Alkaline Soil: Like many Maltese native plants, Bearded Irises thrive in the limestone-rich, alkaline soil found across the islands.

Low Water Needs: Once established, only water during extreme dry spells. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure with this plant.

Color: Deep Royal Purple.

Bloom Time: May – June.

Height: 80 – 100 cm.

Planting Time: March – May (or Autumn).
