Description
Elevate your garden with the timeless beauty of the Bearded Iris (Iris germanica). This variety is celebrated for its large, velvety, dark blue flowers that feature the iconic “beard” on the lower petals (falls). These irises are not just flowers; they are living works of art that bring sophisticated color and architectural structure to any garden bed.
Key Features for Malta:
Mediterranean Native Heritage: Iris germanica is incredibly well-suited to the Maltese climate. They love the sun and can handle dry spells once established.
Dramatic Color: The intense dark blue/indigo hue provides a stunning contrast against the plant’s sword-like, grey-green foliage.
Hardy Perennial: Unlike some delicate bulbs, these irises grow from rhizomes that naturalize beautifully, becoming larger and more impressive each year.
Scented Blooms: Many German Irises carry a light, sweet fragrance that enhances the garden atmosphere in late spring.
Expert Planting Tips for our Customers:
The “Sun-Bather” Rule: In Malta, rhizomes should be planted so the top is slightly exposed to the sun. Do not bury them deeply, as the rhizome needs the sun’s warmth to trigger flowering.
Well-Draining Soil: Irises hate “wet feet.” Ensure they are planted in a spot where water doesn’t pool, or plant them on a slight mound.
Spacing: Plant rhizomes about 30–40 cm apart to allow room for the clumps to grow over the years.
After-Bloom Care: Once the flowers fade, cut the flower stalk down to the base but keep the leaves. The leaves continue to feed the rhizome for next year’s blooms.
Division: Every 3–4 years, you can dig up and divide the rhizomes in late summer to create even more plants for your garden!
Color: Deep Indigo / Dark Blue.
Position: Full Sun (essential for blooming).
Hardiness: Very Hardy (Perennial).
Bloom Time: Late Spring to Early Summer (typically April/May in Malta).
Height: 60 – 90 cm (Tall and stately).
