🪴 Planting Instructions

• When to plant: Autumn, once the soil has cooled; allow time for chilling if needed
• Planting depth: Approximately 10cm deep, measured from the soil surface to the base of the bulb
• Spacing: Approximately 10–15cm apart
• Soil: Moderately fertile, well-drained soil. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
• Planting method: Place bulbs with their pointed ends facing upwards, cover with soil and water if dry. Wear gloves, as the bulbs can irritate skin.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist while roots, leaves and flowers develop. Allow excess water to drain away and avoid standing water in saucers. Reduce watering as the foliage yellows, keeping dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position sheltered from strong winds. In Malta, morning sunshine with some afternoon shade can help protect the flowers from strong heat.

🌿 Feeding

Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue feeding after flowering while the leaves remain green, then stop once they begin to yellow.

🍃 After Flowering

Cut off the faded flower stalk, leaving the leaves intact until they have completely yellowed and dried.

Bulbs can remain in well-drained soil, but flower spikes may be smaller in later years. Fresh bulbs generally give the fullest display.

🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips

Hyacinths benefit from winter chilling. If the bulbs have not already been chilled, refrigerating them in a paper bag for around 6–8 weeks before planting can improve flowering in mild climates. Keep them away from fruit, which releases gas that can damage the developing flowers, and never freeze them.

Plant promptly after chilling, once outdoor conditions are cooler. Check any supplier treatment instructions before refrigerating.

Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, with the highest concentration of toxins in the bulbs. Keep bulbs and plants away from pets. Bulb handling can also cause skin irritation.
