Description
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during Malta’s hot summer months. Water deeply when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry, but avoid leaving the roots sitting in water. Reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.
☀️ Light
Hibiscus thrives in full sun and flowers best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. During extreme summer heat, a little afternoon shade can help reduce stress, particularly for potted plants.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This fast-growing evergreen shrub can reach 2–4 metres if planted in the ground. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and more flowers, while removing faded blooms helps keep the plant looking its best.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a rich, well-draining potting mix with added compost or organic matter. Good drainage is essential, as Hibiscus dislikes waterlogged soil.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring, summer, and early autumn with a balanced or flowering plant fertilizer high in potassium to encourage continuous blooming. Reduce feeding during winter.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Hibiscus is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a suitable choice for most pet-friendly homes. However, it’s always best to discourage pets from chewing on any ornamental plant.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While Hibiscus is not considered a significant air-purifying plant, its lush foliage contributes to a healthier outdoor environment and adds natural beauty to patios, balconies, and gardens.
