Description
💧 Watering
This plant has a built-in “cup” or “tank” at the center of its leaves. You should keep this central cup filled with fresh water (ideally filtered or rainwater, as they can be sensitive to the lime in Maltese tap water). Change the water every few weeks to prevent stagnation. The soil itself should be kept just barely moist, but never soggy.
☀️ Light
It thrives in bright, indirect light. It loves the warmth of the Mediterranean but will scorch instantly if placed in direct Maltese sunlight. It is the perfect plant for a bright hallway, a bathroom with a window, or a shaded “loggia” where other flowering plants might struggle with the lack of direct sun.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features smooth, leathery, strap-like leaves that form a natural reservoir. The “flower” is actually a collection of colorful bracts that can remain vibrant for up to 3–4 months. Once the bract eventually fades, the mother plant will slowly die back, but it will produce “pups” (offsets) at the base that your customers can grow into entirely new plants.
🪴 Potting Mix
Needs a very airy, porous medium. A mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a little peat is perfect. They have small root systems used primarily for anchoring rather than heavy nutrient uptake, so they don’t need a large pot.
🌿 Fertilizer
They are light feeders. You can use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to 1/4 strength, sprayed onto the leaves or added to the soil during the growing season. Avoid putting fertilizer directly into the central cup, as it can burn the delicate new growth.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Guzmania is non-toxic to dogs and cats. It is a fantastic, safe alternative for pet owners who want a “tropical” look without the danger associated with lilies or certain palms. However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
