Description

Add a touch of the exotic to your Maltese garden with the spectacular Gloriosa Rothschildiana. Known as the ‘Flame Lily’, this stunning climber produces unique, swept-back petals in fiery red with vivid yellow edges. Unlike traditional lilies, the Gloriosa uses tendrils at the tips of its leaves to climb, making it a dramatic choice for trellises, fences, or large decorative pots with supports.

Key Features for Malta:

Exotic Visual Impact: The “flaming” flowers are architectural masterpieces, bringing a tropical feel that perfectly suits the Maltese climate.

Versatile Climber: Can reach heights of 100-200cm when provided with a support, making it perfect for vertical gardening in smaller courtyard spaces.

Long Flowering Season: Enjoy these artistic blooms from May all the way through October—one of the longest-blooming summer exotics.

Superior Cut Flower: The stems are highly prized by florists for their longevity and striking appearance in high-end floral arrangements.

Heat Loving: Originally from tropical regions, this plant thrives in the warm Maltese sun.

Expert Tips for Growing Flame Lilies in Malta:

Planting Position: Choose a warm, sunny spot. While they love the heat, they appreciate a location that is somewhat sheltered from strong winds to protect their delicate climbing tendrils.

Horizontal Planting: Plant the L-shaped tubers horizontally, about 5-8cm deep. Handle them carefully as they are brittle.

Support is Key: As soon as shoots appear, provide a trellis, netting, or thin bamboo stakes for the plant to grab onto.

Feeding & Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks during the growing season to encourage more “flames.”

Dormancy Care: After the foliage dies back in late autumn, stop watering. The tubers can be left in the pot to rest in a dry spot until next spring.

Safety First: Please note that all parts of the Gloriosa are toxic if ingested; plant them out of reach of pets and children.
