Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish the plant. Once established, Gaura is highly drought-tolerant and only requires occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as it prefers drier conditions.
☀️ Light
Gaura thrives in full sun and flowers best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It tolerates Malta’s summer heat well and is an excellent choice for exposed, sunny gardens.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This airy, clump-forming perennial produces slender stems topped with masses of white or pink flowers from late spring until autumn. Remove spent flower stems to encourage continuous blooming, and lightly trim the plant if it becomes leggy during the season.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in well-draining soil or a quality potting mix with added grit or perlite. Good drainage is essential, as Gaura does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
🌿 Fertilizer
Gaura requires very little feeding. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring, or mix compost into the soil at the start of the growing season. Excess fertilizer may encourage leafy growth with fewer flowers.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Gaura is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet-friendly gardens.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Gaura is valued for its ornamental beauty and its ability to attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. While it is not known as an air-purifying plant, it contributes to a healthy and vibrant garden ecosystem.
