Description

☀️ Light
Bright, filtered light. In Malta, the morning sun is perfect, but the afternoon sun is its enemy. It will scorched and turn yellow if left in the direct glare of a 3:00 PM August sun. A spot that gets dappled shade under a larger tree or a canopy is ideal.

💧 Watering
Consistent and Specific. Gardenias like to stay moist but never soggy.
The Malta Essential: Our tap water is very “hard” (full of lime/calcium), which Gardenias hate. Over time, tap water will turn the leaves yellow (chlorosis). Use rainwater or bottled water if possible, or add a few drops of vinegar/lemon juice to your watering can to neutralize the lime.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Thick, leathery, dark green leaves that are incredibly glossy. It grows as a compact shrub, usually reaching 0.5 to 1 meter in a pot. The flowers start pure white and fade to a creamy yellow as they age.

🪴 Potting Mix
Acidic (Ericaceous) soil only. This is the most important rule. Do not use regular garden soil from Malta. Buy a specific “Ericaceous” (acid-loving) potting mix from a garden center.

🌿 Fertilizer
Acid-loving plant food. Use a fertilizer specifically for Gardenias, Azaleas, or Camellias every 2–3 weeks from March to September. This helps keep the leaves dark green and the flower buds from dropping.

❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic. Gardenias contain geniposides which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or hives in cats and dogs if ingested.
