Description
☀️ Light
Full Shade. In Malta, the sun is a Fuchsia killer. They need a cool, bright spot that never gets direct midday sun. A north-facing balcony or a shaded courtyard is perfect.
💧 Watering
High. They like to stay consistently moist. In summer, you will likely need to water them every morning. If the soil dries out completely, the flowers will drop instantly.
Tip: Don’t let them sit in a saucer of water, or the roots will rot in the humidity.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
They can be Upright (bushy) or Trailing (perfect for hanging baskets). The leaves are small, serrated, and dark green. The flowers are the star—looking like little bells with contrasting “skirts.”
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a rich, water-retaining potting soil (like one with a bit of peat or coco coir) but mix in some perlite so it doesn’t get “mucky.”
🌿 Fertilizer
Heavy feeder. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks during the spring and early summer to keep the blooms coming.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! Fuchsias are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a great choice for pet-owners.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
💡 The “Maltese Summer” Survival Guide:
Most Fuchsias in Malta struggle once the temperature hits 30°C. To help yours survive:
1. Misting: On very dry, hot days, mist the leaves with water to cool the plant down.
2. The “Haircut”: If the plant starts looking “tired” in July, give it a light trim and move it to the coolest spot in the house or garden. It will often bounce back when the weather cools in September.
