Description
💧 Watering
Fuchsias are thirsty. They prefer their soil to be “moist but not wet.” During a Maltese summer, a Fuchsia in a hanging basket may need watering twice a day—once in the early morning and once in the evening. If the soil dries out completely, the flowers and buds will drop almost immediately.
☀️ Light
In Malta, Fuchsias are shade-loving plants. They should never be placed in direct afternoon sun. A north-facing balcony or a shaded courtyard is ideal. They love “cool” light; the bright, indirect light found under a canopy or a porch will keep them blooming without scorching their delicate leaves.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
They have small, serrated green leaves on woody or semi-woody stems. Depending on the variety, they can be upright (good for pots) or trailing (perfect for hanging baskets). The flowers come in stunning bicolors—often combinations of purple, pink, red, and white.
🪴 Potting Mix
They need a rich, moisture-retentive mix that still drains well. Use a high-quality potting compost with some added perlite or vermiculite. Because they are heavy feeders and drinkers, they appreciate a mix that doesn’t “cake” or become hard when dry.
🌿 Fertilizer
Fuchsias are voracious eaters. To keep those “dancers” coming, use a balanced liquid fertilizer every week during the growing season (March to June). Once the heat of July hits, they may stop flowering; you can reduce feeding then and resume when the weather cools in September.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! Fuchsias are non-toxic to cats and dogs. They are a wonderful, worry-free choice for pet owners.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily an outdoor or terrace plant. Their main benefit is their ability to attract pollinators. While we don’t have hummingbirds in Malta, our local bees and hawkmoths love to visit the deep bells.
💡 The “Summer Survival” Strategy for Malta:
The “Siesta” Period: Don’t be surprised if your Fuchsia looks “tired” in August. The Maltese heat puts them into a semi-dormancy. To help them survive:
1. Mist them: On very hot days, give the foliage a gentle mist with water to increase local humidity.
2. Move them: If your balcony gets “heat bounce” from the stone walls, move the pots to the floor or a cooler spot for July and August.
3. Don’t prune in heat: Wait until the weather cools in autumn or early spring to do your heavy pruning.
