💧 Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth and flowering, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Continue watering after flowering while the leaves remain green. Stop regular watering once the foliage yellows and the corms become dormant.
☀️ Light & Position
Choose a bright, sheltered position. In Malta, morning sunshine with light afternoon shade is a practical choice, particularly in pots. Freesias flower best in cool growing conditions, so avoid hot, enclosed spaces.
🌿 Feeding
Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer once flower buds appear, following the product instructions. Continue after flowering while the leaves remain green, then stop as they yellow.
🍃 After Flowering
Remove faded flower stems and allow the foliage to yellow and dry naturally before cutting it back.
Corms can remain planted where the soil drains freely and stays dry during summer. Where summer irrigation keeps the soil wet, lift them after the foliage dies back and store somewhere dry and ventilated until autumn.
🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips
Malta’s mild winters favour autumn planting for spring flowers. Wait until the strongest autumn heat has passed, and protect plants from strong winds.
Avoid regular summer watering around dormant corms. If the packet specifies prepared corms or a different planting schedule, follow those instructions.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Freesias are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, discourage pets from eating the plants or digging up the corms, as eating plant material can still cause stomach upset.
