Description
The Mini Fig Tree is a compact form of the classic Mediterranean fig, producing attractive lobed foliage and, under the right conditions, delicious edible fruit. Naturally suited to Malta’s climate, it is an excellent choice for sunny balconies, terraces, patios, and smaller gardens where a full-sized fig tree may be impractical.
💧 Watering
Water regularly during spring and summer, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Potted fig trees can dry out quickly during Malta’s hot summer weather and may require frequent watering, especially while developing fruit. Reduce watering considerably during winter dormancy.
☀️ Light
Fig trees thrive in full sun and perform best with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. A warm, sunny position encourages strong growth, fruit ripening, and better flavour.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
The Mini Fig Tree develops distinctive, deeply lobed green leaves and maintains a naturally compact habit when grown in a container. It is deciduous, so yellowing and leaf drop during autumn and winter are completely normal. Light pruning during dormancy can help maintain its size and shape.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is essential, particularly when growing in containers. Fig trees can perform well when somewhat restricted in pots, which can also help keep their overall size manageable.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring as new growth begins. During the growing and fruiting season, a fertilizer with good potassium levels can help support fruit development. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can encourage lots of leafy growth at the expense of fruit.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Fig trees are toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves, stems, and milky sap contain irritating compounds that can cause skin irritation and digestive upset if chewed or ingested. Keep the plant away from pets that are likely to nibble foliage.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Fig trees are primarily grown for their attractive foliage and edible fruit rather than for specific air-purifying properties. When grown outdoors, their leafy canopy contributes greenery and natural shade to balconies, terraces, and gardens.
