💧 Watering
Water when the top 3–5cm of the potting mix feels dry, allowing excess water to drain away completely. During Malta’s warmer months, check the soil more frequently, while watering should be reduced during winter. Avoid overwatering or allowing the roots to remain in standing water.
☀️ Light
Ficus triangularis thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Plenty of light encourages compact, healthy growth, particularly in variegated forms. Protect it from Malta’s intense midday summer sun, especially when grown behind glass.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow to moderate-growing evergreen develops woody stems covered with distinctive triangular leaves. With time, it forms an attractive small tree or bushy indoor specimen. It may drop leaves if exposed to sudden changes in temperature, light, watering, or location, so avoid moving it unnecessarily.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining indoor potting mix with added perlite, pumice, or orchid bark to improve drainage and airflow around the roots. Always choose a container with drainage holes to reduce the risk of root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ficus triangularis is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Its milky sap can also irritate the mouth and skin, so keep the plant away from pets that may chew the foliage and wear gloves when pruning if you have sensitive skin.
