Description

Ficus repens, more commonly known as Ficus pumila or Creeping Fig, is a vigorous evergreen climber with small, delicate leaves that quickly cover walls, trellises, and fences. In Malta’s mild climate, it grows exceptionally well both outdoors in shaded areas and indoors as a trailing or climbing houseplant.

💧 Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant is establishing. Once established outdoors, Creeping Fig becomes fairly drought-tolerant, although it benefits from regular watering during Malta’s hot summer months. Indoor plants should be watered when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry, avoiding prolonged waterlogging.

☀️ Light
Ficus repens thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade. Outdoors, it grows well in shaded or semi-shaded locations and tolerates gentle morning sun. Protect indoor plants from intense direct summer sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This fast-growing climber produces dense mats of small, heart-shaped leaves that cling naturally to walls and other surfaces using aerial roots. Regular pruning helps control its vigorous growth, encourages denser foliage, and prevents it from spreading beyond its intended area.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter. When grown in containers, ensure the pot has good drainage to keep the roots healthy.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy foliage. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ficus repens is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Its milky sap may also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Keep the plant away from pets and wear gloves when pruning if necessary.

When grown indoors, Creeping Fig helps improve indoor air quality through its dense foliage. Outdoors, it provides excellent green coverage, helping to cool walls and create a lush, natural environment.
