The Ficus Nitida (often called Ficus microcarpa or the Indian Laurel) is the tougher, more disciplined brother of the Ficus benjamina. In Malta, you’ll see these everywhere, often pruned into perfect “lollipops” or square hedges in public squares and large planters.

Description

☀️ Light
Very Bright. Unlike the Benjamina, the Nitida can handle full sun once it is acclimated. Indoors, it needs to be right next to your brightest window. If it’s too dark, it will grow thin and lose its “thick” look.

💧 Watering
Moderate. It is more drought-tolerant than other Figs. Water when the top half of the soil is dry. In a Maltese summer, it’s thirsty; in winter, let it dry out more to avoid root rot.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It has upright, glossy, oval leaves that are thicker and more “rubbery” than the Weeping Fig. It grows fast and can become a massive tree if planted in the ground, but it is easily kept as a topiary (shaped bush) in pots.

🪴 Potting Mix
Standard well-draining soil. It isn’t picky about soil types and handles the alkaline Maltese water/soil very well.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks during spring and summer. This keeps the foliage a deep, rich green.

❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic. Like all Ficus, the milky sap can irritate the skin and mouth of cats and dogs.
