Description

💧 Watering
Water when the top 3–5cm of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain away completely. During Malta’s warm summer months, the plant may need more frequent watering, while watering should be reduced during winter. Avoid leaving the roots sitting in water.

☀️ Light
Rubber Plants thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Variegated varieties require brighter conditions to maintain their leaf colour. Protect the plant from intense midday summer sun, which can scorch the foliage.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow to moderate-growing evergreen develops large, leathery leaves in shades of green or variegated cream and green, depending on the variety. It can eventually grow into an impressive indoor specimen. Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and encourage healthy growth, and prune if needed to maintain a compact shape.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a rich, well-draining indoor potting mix with added perlite or bark to improve drainage. Always choose a pot with drainage holes to help prevent root rot.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Like all members of the Ficus family, the stems and leaves contain a thick, milky white sap (latex) that is toxic to dogs and cats. If ingested, it causes oral irritation, drooling, and vomiting. Skin or eye contact with the sap can also cause mild topical inflammation.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Ficus elastica is recognised as an excellent indoor air-purifying plant. Its broad, glossy leaves help improve indoor air quality while creating a lush, tropical atmosphere.
