Description
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1–2cm of soil begins to dry, and avoid allowing the compost to dry out completely. During Malta’s hot summers, container-grown plants may require more frequent watering.
☀️ Light
Exacum thrives in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Protect it from strong afternoon sunlight, especially during summer, as excessive heat can shorten the flowering period.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This compact, bushy plant produces masses of small, fragrant flowers from spring through summer, and often longer in Malta’s mild climate. Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming soggy. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 2–3 weeks during the flowering season with a balanced liquid fertilizer or one formulated for flowering plants. Reduce feeding once flowering has finished.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Exacum is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a suitable choice for pet-friendly homes. However, it’s always best to discourage pets from chewing on ornamental plants. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Exacum is primarily grown for its attractive flowers and sweet fragrance rather than its air-purifying qualities. It brings colour and freshness to indoor spaces, balconies, and sheltered patios.
