Description

Euphorbia stellispina is a striking collector’s succulent native to South Africa, admired for its distinctive ribbed stems and impressive star-like spines. Its sculptural appearance and unusual growth habit make it a standout specimen, often mistaken for a cactus despite belonging to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae).

Slow growing and exceptionally drought tolerant, this fascinating succulent thrives in bright conditions with minimal care. Its bold architectural form makes it an excellent addition to succulent collections, modern interiors and sunny windowsills.

Care Guide

☀️ Light:
Prefers bright indirect light or several hours of gentle direct sun each day. Gradually acclimatise to stronger sunlight to maintain compact, healthy growth.

💧 Watering:
Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during winter dormancy and never allow the plant to remain in wet soil.

🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit or pumice to ensure healthy root development.

🌡 Temperature:
Best grown between 10–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C.

Mature plants may produce small yellow-green flowers (cyathia) around the stem tips during spring and summer. While the flowers are modest, they provide a subtle contrast to the plant’s dramatic spines.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Keep Out of Reach of Pets
Like all Euphorbia species, Euphorbia stellispina contains a milky white latex sap that is toxic and can cause skin irritation, eye injury and digestive upset if ingested by people or pets. Always handle with care and keep away from children and animals.

Good to Know
Despite its cactus-like appearance, Euphorbia stellispina is not a cactus. Its impressive “star” of persistent spines is formed from hardened flower stalks rather than true cactus areoles, giving the plant its distinctive appearance and its species name, which means “star-spined.”
