Description

Euphorbia obesa is one of the world’s most distinctive succulents, prized for its perfectly rounded, ribbed shape that closely resembles a baseball. Native to South Africa, this slow-growing species is highly sought after by collectors for its symmetrical form, attractive green body marked with subtle horizontal bands, and remarkable architectural beauty.

Although often mistaken for a cactus, Euphorbia obesa is a true succulent belonging to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). Compact, easy to care for and exceptionally drought tolerant, it makes a striking addition to bright windowsills, modern interiors and specialist succulent collections.

Plant Details

Care Guide

☀️ Light:
Prefers bright indirect light or several hours of gentle morning sun. Acclimatise gradually if placing in stronger direct sunlight.

💧 Watering:
Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during winter dormancy and never allow the plant to remain in wet soil.

🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit or pumice.

🌡 Temperature:
Best grown between 10–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C.

Flowering
Mature plants may produce tiny yellow-green flowers from the crown during spring and summer. As a dioecious species, individual plants are either male or female, so seed production only occurs when both sexes are present and flowering at the same time.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Keep Out of Reach of Pets
Like all Euphorbia species, Euphorbia obesa contains a milky white latex sap that is toxic and can cause skin irritation, eye injury and digestive upset if ingested by people or pets. Always handle with care and keep away from children and animals.

Good to Know
Despite its cactus-like appearance, Euphorbia obesa is completely spineless and belongs to the spurge family rather than the cactus family. Due to habitat loss and over-collection in the wild, it is considered a protected species in its native South Africa. Nearly all plants available today are responsibly propagated by specialist growers, helping to conserve wild populations.
