Description

Euphorbia eritrea ‘Variegata’ is a striking architectural succulent characterised by its tall, upright stems and beautiful cream, pale yellow and green variegation. Its strongly ribbed, cactus-like stems create an impressive vertical silhouette, while the contrasting colours make each specimen particularly distinctive.

As the plant matures, it can develop an increasingly branched, candelabra-like form, creating a spectacular statement plant for bright interiors, conservatories and sheltered patios. Drought tolerant and relatively easy to maintain, it combines the dramatic appearance of a large cactus with the unusual colouring of a variegated succulent.

Care Guide

☀️ Light:
Prefers very bright light with some gentle direct sun. Variegated portions of the stems contain less chlorophyll and can be more sensitive to scorching, so gradually acclimatise the plant to direct sunlight and provide some protection from intense summer afternoon sun.

💧 Watering:
Allow the compost to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water sparingly during the cooler months when growth slows, and never allow the roots to remain waterlogged.

🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit or pumice to provide excellent drainage.

🌡 Temperature:
Prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost. For container-grown plants, keeping temperatures above approximately 10°C is recommended.

Flowering

Mature specimens may occasionally produce small yellow-green flowers (cyathia) along the upper portions of the stems. These are relatively inconspicuous, with ‘Variegata’ primarily grown for its dramatic structure and colourful foliage.

A relatively low-maintenance succulent when provided with plenty of light, excellent drainage and careful watering. Its variegated growth benefits from a little extra protection from intense sunlight compared with completely green forms.

Like other Euphorbia species, this plant produces a milky latex sap that is toxic and highly irritating. Contact may irritate the skin and eyes, while ingestion can cause gastrointestinal problems in people and pets. Sharp spines along the stems can also cause injury.

Good to Know

Despite its cactus-like appearance, Euphorbia eritrea ‘Variegata’ is not a cactus. It belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and stores water within its thick, succulent stems.

The variegated colouring occurs because different areas of the stems contain varying amounts of chlorophyll. This creates the attractive cream, yellow and green patterns and means that no two specimens are exactly alike.

Always wear gloves when pruning, repotting or handling damaged stems, and avoid contact with the milky sap.
