Botanical Name: Euphorbia eritrea ‘Marmorata’
Common Name: Variegated Candelabra Euphorbia • Marmorata Euphorbia
Plant Type: Variegated Succulent
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Upright, columnar and branching with age
Mature Size: Can eventually reach several metres tall in ideal outdoor conditions; remains considerably smaller when container grown
Care Guide
☀️ Light:
Prefers very bright light with some gentle direct sun. Because the pale variegated areas contain less chlorophyll, gradually acclimatise the plant to strong sunlight and protect it from sudden exposure to intense midday or afternoon sun.
💧 Watering:
Allow the compost to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water sparingly during the cooler months when growth slows, and never allow the roots to remain waterlogged.
🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit or pumice to provide excellent drainage.
🌡 Temperature:
Prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost. For container-grown plants, keeping temperatures above approximately 10°C is recommended.
Flowering
Mature specimens may produce small yellow-green flowers (cyathia) along the upper portions of the stems. Flowering is relatively insignificant, with ‘Marmorata’ primarily grown for its impressive form and beautiful variegated colouring.

🐾 Pet Safety – Keep Out of Reach of Pets
Like other Euphorbia species, ‘Marmorata’ contains a milky latex sap that is toxic and highly irritating. Contact can irritate the skin and eyes, while ingestion may cause gastrointestinal problems in people and pets. Its stems may also carry sharp spines, so position the plant away from children and animals.
Good to Know
Despite its cactus-like appearance, this plant is not a cactus but a member of the Euphorbia genus. The ‘Marmorata’ name refers to its beautiful marble-like variegation, with patterns of cream and green developing differently across each plant.
The pale portions of the stems contain less chlorophyll than the green areas, which can make variegated plants somewhat slower growing and more sensitive to intense sunlight.
Always wear gloves when pruning, repotting or handling damaged stems, and avoid contact with the milky sap.
Please Note: As a living plant, each specimen is unique. The amount and distribution of cream and green variegation, height, branching and overall shape will naturally vary from plant to plant.
