Description
💧 Watering
True to its “Swamp” moniker, this tree is highly water-loving compared to other coral trees. It thrives in wet, poorly drained environments and can handle seasonal waterlogging easily. During the hot Maltese summer, it requires frequent, deep watering. However, once established in the ground, it develops a deep root system that can survive drier spells.
☀️ Light
It requires full, direct sunlight to produce its unique, dense clusters of claw-like flowers. It should be planted in an open, unshaded area where it can soak up at least six to eight hours of sun daily. It handles intense Mediterranean heat perfectly fine, provided its roots don’t dry out completely.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features large, rounded, three-lobed green leaves that drop during the winter dry period. The branches and trunk are heavily covered in sharp, stout prickles or thorns, giving the tree a rugged, ancient look. It grows into a wide, spreading shade tree; prune lightly in late winter when dormant to manage its shape and size.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives best in heavy, moisture-retaining soils like clay or organic loam. Unlike most plants, it handles poor drainage completely fine. It adapts well to a variety of soil pH levels, including the alkaline limestone soils found throughout Malta, as long as it gets plenty of organic matter.
🌿 Fertilizer
As a member of the legume family (Fabaceae), it is a nitrogen-fixing plant that works with soil bacteria to create its own nitrogen. Consequently, it requires very little fertilizer. A light dressing of compost or a low-nitrogen, balanced fertilizer in early spring is all it needs.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Like many Erythrina species, the bark, leaves, and particularly the bright seeds contain toxic alkaloids (such as erythroidine) that can cause weakness, lightheadedness, or more serious neurological issues if chewed on or eaten by dogs and cats.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Its wide, dense summer canopy serves as an excellent natural shade buffer and windbreak. Because it thrives in waterlogged ground, it is also a fantastic choice for soil stabilization near pond edges or low-lying agricultural valleys where water naturally collects.
