Description
💧 Watering
Allow the top two-thirds of the soil to dry out completely before watering, as this variety is very prone to root rot. During the humid Maltese winter, you may only need to water once every three to four weeks.
☀️ Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light but is remarkably tolerant of lower-light corners in traditional Maltese townhouses. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can cause unsightly brown scorch marks on the dark foliage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features broad, glossy, sword-shaped leaves that grow in dense rosettes atop woody canes. It is a slow grower, making it an ideal choice for a permanent decorative spot without the need for frequent pruning.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a loose, well-aerated potting mix with plenty of perlite or pumice to ensure rapid drainage. This is essential in Malta to prevent the “wet feet” that can lead to fungal issues during our more humid months.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer only twice a year—once in spring and once in summer. Like most Dracaenas, it is sensitive to fluoride in local tap water; using filtered or rainwater helps prevent brown leaf tips.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Contains saponins which are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or swallowed, potentially causing vomiting or drooling. It is best placed on a sturdy plant stand or in a room where pets are supervised.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An excellent natural filter that removes common indoor toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. Its large leaf surface area is particularly effective at refreshing the air in closed or air-conditioned rooms.
