Description
💧 Watering
Allow the top half of the soil to dry out completely before watering, as this variety is very sensitive to overwatering. In the humid Maltese winter, you may only need to water every 3–4 weeks to keep the roots healthy.
☀️ Light
One of the best options for lower-light areas, though it prefers bright, indirect light to stay lush. Avoid the direct Maltese sun at all costs, as it will quickly burn the dark, waxy foliage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Grows very slowly, maintaining its tight, tufted shape on woody stems for many years. This makes it an excellent “investment” plant that won’t quickly outgrow its designated spot in your home.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in a loose, well-draining potting mix with added perlite or volcanic rock to ensure oxygen reaches the roots. Good drainage is essential to prevent the “wet feet” that lead to root rot in our Mediterranean climate.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed very lightly with a balanced liquid fertilizer only twice a year, once in spring and once in mid-summer. It is sensitive to fluoride and salts in Maltese tap water, so using filtered or rainwater will prevent brown leaf tips.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Contains saponins which are toxic to both cats and dogs if ingested, potentially causing vomiting or drooling. It is best placed on a sturdy plant stand or in a decorative pot out of reach of pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Highly effective at filtering indoor toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. It is a hardworking cleaner that helps maintain a fresh atmosphere in closed, air-conditioned rooms.
