Description
💧 Watering
Water when the top 3–4 cm of soil feels dry, usually every 7–10 days. Be careful during the humid Maltese winter, as the plant is susceptible to root rot if the soil remains cold and soggy.
☀️ Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light which helps maintain the vivid white variegation. Avoid the intense Maltese midday sun, as it will quickly scorch the large, fleshy leaves.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features broad, oval leaves with a striking feathered pattern of white and green. It is a moderate grower that can reach a significant height, eventually forming a thick, decorative trunk.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a rich but well-draining potting soil, ideally mixed with perlite or orchid bark. This ensures the roots stay aerated even when the air humidity in Malta spikes.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month from March to October. Because of our hard tap water, an occasional flush with distilled or rainwater will prevent mineral salts from browning the leaf edges.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Highly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause swelling and irritation. Keep it on a high stand or in a room where pets are not allowed.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An excellent air purifier that is particularly efficient at removing CO2 and toxins like xylene from the home. Its large leaves also help naturally regulate indoor humidity levels.
