💧 Watering
Like all succulents, they store water in their fleshy, needle-like leaves.
Summer: Water once a week or whenever the soil feels bone-dry. In the peak of August, they might appreciate a bit more frequency if kept in shallow pots.
Winter: Rarely needs watering. In Malta, our winter rain is usually enough. Just ensure they aren’t sitting in a “puddle,” as root rot is their only real weakness.

☀️ Light
Full Sun is non-negotiable. * The flowers of the ‘Jewel’ series are phototropic—they actually “wake up” and open when the sun hits them and close tightly at night or on cloudy days.
To get that “carpet of color” effect on your terrace, place them in the sunniest spot you have.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
The foliage consists of small, succulent, finger-like leaves that have a “crystalline” texture (hence the name Ice Plant). They have a low, spreading habit, usually reaching only 10–15 cm in height but spreading up to 50 cm wide.
Common ‘Jewel’ Colors: You’ll find them in ‘Jewel of Desert Garnet’ (Red), ‘Topaz’ (Orange), and ‘Amethyst’ (Purple).

🪴 Potting Mix
They thrive in poor, gritty soil.
A “Cactus and Succulent” mix is perfect.
If you are planting them in a Maltese stone planter, mix your soil with plenty of sand or fine gravel (żrar). They need the water to pass through the roots almost instantly.

🌿 Fertilizer
Very low needs. You can give them a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer once in the spring to kickstart the blooming season, but over-fertilizing will lead to lots of green leaves and very few “jewel” flowers.

Generally Safe. Most Delosperma species are considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, however, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats.
