Description
Add a touch of drama to your garden with our Cactus Dahlia Mix. This variety is famous for its unique “spiky” look, featuring narrow, pointed petals that curve outward like the spines of a cactus. This mix provides a vibrant palette of colors that will transform any sunny border or large patio pot into a focal point. They are also world-class cut flowers—just one or two blooms in a vase create a stunning architectural display.
Key Features for Malta:
Extended Color: In our warm climate, Dahlias can bloom from June all the way into December if cared for properly.
Sun Requirements: They love the sun! Plant in a full sun position to ensure strong stems and the most vibrant colors.
Compact Growth: This specific mix stays at a manageable height of 40–60 cm, making them much sturdier against the wind and perfect for Maltese terraces.
Pollinator Magnet: The open structure of these flowers is highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
Expert Planting Tips for our Customers:
Planting Depth: Plant the tubers about 10–15 cm deep. Make sure the “crown” (where the old stem was) is pointing upwards.
Staking: Even though this is a more compact variety, the flower heads can become heavy. Inserting a small bamboo cane at planting time will help support them during summer breezes.
Watering & Feeding: Dahlias are thirsty! Keep them well-watered during the peak Maltese summer. For “show-stopping” blooms, feed them with a liquid flower fertilizer every 2 weeks once the first buds appear.
Deadheading: This is the secret to more flowers! Regularly snip off faded blooms to encourage the plant to keep producing new buds.
Winter Care: While they are not frost-hardy, they can usually stay in the ground in Malta’s mild winters. However, if your garden soil is very heavy clay, we recommend lifting them and storing them in a dry place to prevent rot during the rainy season.
Position: Full Sun.
Hardiness: Half-Hardy (Can stay in-ground in most Maltese gardens if well-drained).
Soil: Rich, well-draining soil (add compost for best results).
