Description
💧 Watering
Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. During Malta’s hot summer months, container-grown plants may need more frequent watering. Reduce watering in winter.
☀️ Light
Croton grows best in bright light with a few hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. Plenty of light helps maintain its vibrant leaf colours, while harsh midday summer sun may scorch the foliage, especially on indoor plants moved outdoors.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow to moderate-growing evergreen develops thick, leathery leaves with brilliant variegation that becomes more colourful in brighter conditions. Remove any damaged or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking healthy, and protect it from cold winds and temperatures below 12°C.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A container with good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Croton is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Its milky sap can also cause skin irritation, so wear gloves when pruning and keep the plant away from pets and young children.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Croton is considered a good indoor air-purifying plant, helping to improve indoor air quality while adding vibrant colour and tropical character to living spaces.
