Description
☀️ Light
Sun-loving top, shaded bottom. The vines and flowers need at least 5–6 hours of sun to bloom well. However, the root zone must stay cool. In Malta, the afternoon sun (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM) is often too much for the flowers, so a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is the “sweet spot.”
💧 Watering
High and consistent. Clematis are thirsty plants. They hate drying out completely, especially in our windy summers.
The Malta Tip: Dig a deep hole and mulch the base heavily with stones, gravel, or low-growing plants to trap moisture and keep the roots from “cooking” in the soil.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
They are deciduous (they lose their leaves in winter). They climb by wrapping their leaf stalks around thin supports like wire or trellis. They won’t “stick” to a flat wall like Ivy; they need something to grab onto.
🪴 Potting Mix
Rich and Alkaline. Clematis actually love the limestone-based, slightly alkaline soil found in Malta. If planting in a pot, use a large, deep container (at least 45 cm deep) with a soil-based mix (like John Innes No. 3) rather than just peat, as it stays cooler and holds nutrients better.
🌿 Fertilizer
Heavy feeders. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Once you see flower buds, switch to a high-potassium feed (like tomato fertilizer) every two weeks to boost the size and color of the blooms.
