Care Guide
☀️ Light:
Thrives in full sun or very bright light. In Malta, gradually acclimatise young plants to direct sunlight to prevent scorching during the hottest summer months.
💧 Watering:
Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows. Established outdoor plants are highly drought tolerant.
🌱 Soil:
Use a free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit, pumice or coarse sand. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Best grown between 15–35°C. Tolerates Malta’s summer heat well once established. Protect young or container-grown plants from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C.

Mature plants may produce spectacular, large white flowers with delicate petals and pale green outer segments. These fragrant flowers typically open during the evening or night and may remain open into the following morning.

Good to Know
Cereus jamacaru is commonly known as Mandacaru in its native Brazil, where it is an important and recognisable cactus of the semi-arid Caatinga region.
Unlike many smaller ornamental cacti, this species can eventually develop into a substantial tree-like specimen with multiple upright branches, making it an impressive feature in suitable outdoor spaces.
Its large, fragrant flowers are adapted to attract nocturnal pollinators, including moths and bats. Once pollinated, they may develop into colourful fruits that are eaten by birds and other wildlife.
Although young plants are compact and suitable for small pots, Cereus jamacaru can grow considerably larger with age and will eventually benefit from a spacious container or a well-drained position in the garden.
