Cassia corymbosa (Senna corymbosa)

Cassia corymbosa, now botanically known as Senna corymbosa, is an attractive evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub known for its masses of cheerful golden-yellow flowers. Its excellent tolerance of heat and sunshine makes it well suited to Malta, where it provides long-lasting colour in sunny borders, large containers, and Mediterranean-style gardens.

💧 Watering

Water regularly while the plant is establishing, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Cassia corymbosa has good drought tolerance, although occasional deep watering during Malta’s prolonged hot, dry summers encourages healthier growth and more abundant flowering. Container-grown plants require more frequent watering.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun for the best flowering, ideally with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It handles Malta’s strong summer sunshine and heat well once established. Some light shade is tolerated, but flowering may be less abundant.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

This fast-growing, bushy shrub develops attractive compound leaves made up of several pairs of green leaflets. Clusters of bright yellow flowers appear over a long flowering period, often from summer well into autumn in warm climates. Light pruning after the main flowering period helps maintain a compact shape and encourages fresh, bushy growth.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in fertile, well-draining soil. Cassia corymbosa adapts to a range of soil types but performs poorly where the roots remain waterlogged. For containers, use a quality general-purpose potting mix with added perlite, pumice, or another coarse material to improve drainage.

🌿 Fertilizer

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as active growth begins. Container-grown plants can receive an additional flowering-plant fertilizer during spring and summer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage lush foliage at the expense of flowers.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Senna species should not be considered pet-safe for eating. Ingestion of plant material, particularly seeds or pods, may cause gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs. Keep fallen seed pods away from curious pets and discourage chewing of the plant.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Cassia corymbosa is primarily valued as an outdoor ornamental shrub rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its abundant yellow flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, making it a useful addition to a pollinator-friendly Maltese garden.
