Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing; however, once settled, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and survives well on minimal summer irrigation. For potted specimens, ensure the soil dries out slightly between waterings to prevent root issues.
☀️ Light
This plant is a true sun-worshipper and requires full sun to produce its iconic red blooms. It thrives in the intense Maltese light and can handle exposed, windy locations with ease.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features narrow, lance-shaped leaves that release a pleasant lemony scent when crushed. It has a dense, slightly drooping growth habit that responds very well to pruning after the flowering season.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a free-draining, slightly acidic to neutral potting medium, as it can sometimes struggle in extremely chalky soils. A mix of standard potting soil with added sand or perlite works perfectly for container growth.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush of flowers. Being part of the Myrtaceae family, it is sensitive to high phosphorus, so look for “native” or “citrus” fertilizers.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The Callistemon is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, making it a safe, colorful addition to any Maltese terrace.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
With its dense, evergreen canopy, it is effective at filtering dust and capturing atmospheric CO2. It is particularly useful as a “living screen” to help buffer noise and urban pollutants.
