Bonsai Pepper (also known as the Szechuan Pepper or Zanthoxylum beecheyanum) is a favorite in Malta because it actually looks like a miniature ancient tree without much effort. It has tiny, glossy leaves and a wonderful, spicy citrus scent when you prune it or rub the foliage.

Description

☀️ Light
Very Bright. It loves a sunny windowsill or a bright balcony. In Malta, it thrives outdoors in partial shade during the summer. If kept indoors, it must be in the brightest spot possible (South or West facing) or it will start dropping its tiny leaves.

💧 Watering
Consistent. This is not a succulent! It has very fine roots and a small pot, meaning it can dry out in a single afternoon during a Maltese heatwave.

The Rule: Keep the soil consistently moist. If the leaves go limp, water it immediately.

The Malta Tip: On windy days (like the Grigal or Majjistral), check the soil twice a day, wind dries out bonsai faster than sun!

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features compound leaves with a very shiny, “winged” stem. In spring, it produces tiny greenish-yellow flowers. It is naturally slow-growing, which makes it perfect for maintaining that tight “bonsai” shape.

🪴 Potting Mix
Well-draining but moisture-retentive. A mix of Akadama and fine lava rock works best. In Malta, adding a little bit of organic compost helps keep it from drying out too fast in our low humidity.

🌿 Fertilizer
Regular feeding. Use a liquid bonsai fertilizer every two weeks from March to September. In the winter “rest” period, once a month is enough.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally Safe. While not specifically listed as highly toxic, the Zanthoxylum family can sometimes have small thorns and the oils can cause mild stomach upset if a pet eats a large amount.
