Description
💧 Watering
Water moderately and with precision. Allow the top 3 to 4 centimeters of the soil to dry out fully before watering again. Begonias possess delicate, shallow roots and fleshy stems that hold water; they are highly prone to rotting if kept constantly soggy. Crucial rule: Never spray or splash water directly onto the leaves, as trapped moisture will quickly cause fungal leaf spot diseases.
☀️ Light
Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Plenty of gentle, filtered light is completely necessary to keep the neon pink and metallic silver coloration vibrant; if kept in too dark a spot, the leaves will turn a dull green. Absolutely protect it from direct summer sun, which will instantly crisp and bleach the foliage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows in a neat, compact mounding habit, typically reaching around 30 centimeters in height and width. Its leaves are covered in tiny, fine hairs that help capture ambient moisture. While it can produce small, pale pink flowers, they are secondary to the dramatic leaves; feel free to pinch them off so the plant directs all its energy into growing spectacular foliage.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a lightweight, highly aerated, and fast-draining potting medium. A premium indoor soil mix blended with plenty of perlite and coco coir or peat moss is ideal. Because its roots grow wide rather than deep, it prefers shallow, wider pots or bowls over deep planters.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed lightly to support its intense leaf production. Apply a balanced liquid indoor plant fertilizer diluted to half-strength once every two to three weeks during the spring and summer active growing season. Do not feed during the winter rest period.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Begonias contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which are most highly concentrated in their underground roots and stems. If chewed or swallowed by dogs or cats, it can cause severe mouth irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While it isn’t a heavy chemical-filtering plant, its broad, textured leaves are excellent at naturally capturing floating dust particles in the air. Because it loves humidity, placing it on a tray filled with pebbles and water (without the pot base touching the water) will create a wonderful local moisture microclimate.
