Description

💧 Watering
Extremely drought-tolerant once established; it requires very little water during the Maltese summer. In pots, allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as overwatering is its most common cause of failure.

☀️ Light
This plant demands full sun to thrive and will produce the most flowers when exposed to intense, direct light. It is perfectly adapted to the high UV levels and heat of the Maltese islands.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It forms a dense, prostrate mat of grayish-green, slightly hairy leaves that help it retain moisture. Its spreading habit makes it an ideal groundcover or a trailing beauty for the edges of stone planters.

🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very well-draining, sandy, or gritty potting medium—mimicking the rocky Maltese coastline is key. It thrives in poor soil and will suffer in rich, heavy, or moisture-retentive composts.

🌿 Fertilizer
Generally requires no fertilizer, as it is adapted to nutrient-poor soils. If desired, a very light application of a balanced fertilizer in early spring is more than enough to boost growth.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
There is no evidence to suggest that Asteriscus maritimus is toxic to dogs or cats. Its low, soft growth habit makes it a safe and non-threatening addition to pet-friendly outdoor spaces.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While not a traditional indoor air purifier, it is excellent at stabilizing soil and preventing dust erosion in coastal winds. Its presence contributes to a healthy, oxygen-rich outdoor environment.
