Description

Add a touch of luxury to your vegetable garden with Pacific Purple Asparagus. This variety is highly sought after by chefs and foodies for its deep, vibrant purple color and its exceptionally high sugar content. Unlike green asparagus, Pacific Purple is tender enough to be eaten raw in salads, where its nutty, sweet flavor really shines. It is also stringless, making it much more tender than standard varieties.

Key Features for Malta:

Gourmet Quality: Higher sugar levels and fewer fibers mean a sweeter, more tender spear.

Stunning Appearance: The deep purple spears make a beautiful addition to the garden and the dinner plate.

Eat it Raw: Because it’s so tender, it can be sliced thinly and eaten fresh. (Note: The purple color turns green when cooked, so steam lightly or eat raw to keep the color!)

Heat Adapted: Developed in New Zealand, this variety performs very well in warmer climates like Malta.

Expert Tips for Growing Purple Asparagus in Malta:

Permanent Home: Like all asparagus, these crowns will produce for 15-20 years. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot where they won’t be disturbed.

Planting Trench: Dig a trench about 20cm deep. Create a small mound of soil at the bottom of the trench and sit the crown on top, draping the roots down the sides.

Soil Nutrition: Onions and asparagus are “heavy feeders.” Use high-quality compost and organic fertilizer at the time of planting to ensure the roots establish strongly.

Harvesting Cycle: Be patient! Do not harvest in the first year. Harvest sparingly in the second year, and enjoy a full harvest from the third year onwards.

Summer Care: During the hot Maltese summer, ensure the plants are watered regularly. Let the spears grow into tall ferns over the summer—these ferns gather energy to store in the crown for next year’s crop.
