The Anigozanthos, famously known as the Kangaroo Paw, is an architectural marvel from Australia that feels right at home in the sunny Maltese climate. It is loved for its unique, fuzzy flowers that resemble the paws of a kangaroo, standing tall on sturdy stalks in vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange, or pink.

💧 Watering
While they are drought-tolerant, they actually need consistent moisture during their active blooming period in spring and summer. Water when the top 2cm of soil is dry. Avoid watering the foliage directly, as their “fuzzy” leaves can be prone to ink spot disease if they stay wet for too long in humid weather.

☀️ Light
These plants are true sun-seekers. They require full sun (at least 6 hours a day) to maintain their intense flower colors and strong stems. In Malta, they can handle the heat perfectly, though a little extra water during a July heatwave will keep the blooms lasting longer.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features fans of strap-like, leathery green leaves that look similar to Iris foliage. The flower stalks can range from compact (30cm) to tall (over 1 meter) depending on the variety. Once the flower stalk has completely faded, cut it right down to the base to encourage new growth.

🪴 Potting Mix
The most important factor is excellent drainage. Use a sandy, free-draining potting mix. While they can tolerate various soils, they prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Since Maltese soil is naturally alkaline, a mix with some added peat or a dedicated Mediterranean potting soil is ideal.

🌿 Fertilizer
Anigozanthos are sensitive to phosphorus. Use a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertilizer (often labeled for Australian natives or “Protea-friendly”) in early spring. Avoid heavy doses of standard fertilizers, which can burn their roots.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Kangaroo Paws are non-toxic to dogs and cats. Their unique texture might be tempting for a curious pet to sniff, but they are safe to have around the house and garden.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Like most outdoor perennials, they are great at producing oxygen. Their tall, structural flower spikes also act as a wonderful lure for local pollinators, adding a “living” element to any terrace or balcony.
