🪴 Planting Instructions

• When to plant: Autumn, once the weather and soil begin to cool
• Planting depth: Around 10–15cm deep, measured from the soil surface to the base of the bulb
• Spacing: Approximately 15–20cm apart
• Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
• Planting method: Place each bulb with the pointed end facing upwards, cover with soil and gently firm.

💧 Watering

Water after planting if the soil is dry. During growth, water when needed to keep the soil lightly moist, allowing excess water to drain away. Reduce watering as the foliage dies back and keep dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.

☀️ Light & Position

Choose a sunny position with some shelter from strong winds. Avoid low spots where rainwater collects, as wet soil can cause the bulbs to rot.

🌿 Feeding

In pots, apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer while the leaves are actively growing, following the product instructions. Stop feeding once the foliage begins to die back.

🍃 After Flowering

Leave the foliage until it has completely yellowed and dried before removing it. Leaves may start fading while the flowers are still on display—this is normal. Leave the dried flower heads for decoration, or remove them before seeds develop.

Bulbs can remain planted where the soil drains freely and stays relatively dry during summer.

Wait for cooler autumn conditions before planting. Good drainage is especially important during Malta’s rainy season, so use pots if your garden soil stays wet. Plant among other flowering plants to help conceal the fading leaves.
