Description
💧 Watering
Water when the top 2–3cm of the potting mix feels dry, keeping the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. During Malta’s warmer months, check the soil more frequently, while watering should be reduced during winter. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in excess water.
☀️ Light
Grows best in bright, indirect light, particularly to maintain its vibrant foliage colour. It can tolerate medium light conditions, although variegation may become less pronounced. Protect it from Malta’s intense direct summer sun, which can scorch or bleach the leaves.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow to moderate-growing plant forms a dense clump of broad, decorative leaves with vivid variegation. Its colourful foliage provides year-round interest, and removing older yellow or damaged leaves will keep the plant looking fresh and healthy.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, airy, well-draining indoor potting mix. Adding perlite and orchid bark helps improve drainage and airflow around the roots while retaining enough moisture for healthy growth.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Aglaonema is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep the plant out of reach of pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Aglaonema is frequently described as an air-purifying houseplant, with studies under controlled conditions showing that plants can absorb certain airborne compounds. In normal homes, it is best appreciated for its lush foliage and contribution to a greener indoor environment rather than as a substitute for proper ventilation or air filtration.
