Description

Add a touch of Mediterranean elegance to your garden with Agapanthus ‘Dark Blue’. Known for its striking globular clusters of deep blue flowers, this perennial is a true showstopper. Growing on strong, slender stems, it creates a sophisticated architectural look in borders and containers alike. Its strap-like green foliage remains attractive even when the plant is not in bloom, providing lush structure to your outdoor space year-round.

Key Features for Malta:

Heat & Drought Tolerant: Once established, Agapanthus is incredibly resilient in the Maltese summer, thriving in the heat and requiring minimal water compared to other summer bloomers.

Salt Tolerant: An excellent choice for coastal gardens in Malta, as it stands up well to salty sea breezes.

Architectural Beauty: Reaching heights of around 60–80 cm, the tall flower heads dance elegantly in the wind, making them perfect for adding vertical interest.

Pot & Patio Specialist: Agapanthus actually prefers its roots to be slightly “crowded,” making it one of the best choices for large pots on Maltese terraces and balconies.

Long-Lasting Blooms: Enjoy a vibrant display of deep blue from July through September, just when the garden needs a burst of cool color.

Expert Tips for Growing Agapanthus in Malta:

Sun is Essential: Plant in the sunniest spot possible. The more sun they get, the more flowers they will produce.

The “Tight Pot” Secret: If planting in a container, choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the root ball. Agapanthus flowers better when the roots feel a bit restricted.

Well-Draining Soil: Ensure your soil or potting mix is free-draining. While they love water during the growing season, they do not like “wet feet” during the winter.

Feeding for Flowers: Use a high-potash fertilizer (like a rose or tomato feed) in early spring and through the flowering season to encourage those big, blue globes.

Pruning: After the flowers have faded, you can cut the flower stems back to the base, but leave the green foliage to gather energy for next year’s bloom.

Color: Deep Blue.

Bloom Time: July – September.
