💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. In Malta’s heat, it can dry out quickly, so check the soil frequently. A good tip is to water from the bottom (placing the pot in a saucer of water for 20 minutes) to avoid getting water on the leaves, which can lead to fungal spotting. In winter, reduce watering and allow the top few centimeters to dry out.
☀️ Light
It loves bright, indirect light. Think of its natural home in the rainforest canopy: it wants filtered sun. Avoid the harsh, direct Maltese afternoon sun, which will scorch its leaves. A spot near an east-facing window or a sheltered, bright bathroom is perfect.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
The ‘Mini’ features small, waxy, succulent-like leaves that cascade beautifully on trailing stems. It is a moderate grower that looks its best when allowed to spill over the sides of a container. To encourage a bushier plant and more flowers, you can pinch back the stems after it has finished blooming.
🪴 Potting Mix
Since it is an epiphyte (growing on trees in the wild), it needs an airy, well-draining mix. An orchid bark mix or a high-quality potting soil amended with plenty of perlite and coco coir is ideal. It actually prefers to be slightly root-bound to produce the best flowers.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half-strength every two weeks during spring and summer. High-potassium “bloom booster” feeds can be used in early summer to help push out those iconic red “lipsticks.”
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The Lipstick Plant is non-toxic to dogs and cats! It’s a fantastic choice for pet owners who want a flowering, trailing plant without the worry.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While its primary job is looking stunning, it does contribute to indoor air quality by increasing humidity through transpiration, a big plus in air-conditioned Maltese homes, and filtering minor household toxins.
