Description
Bok Choy (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis), also known as Pak Choi or Chinese Cabbage, is a popular Asian leafy vegetable prized for its crisp, pale green or white stalks and tender, dark green leaves. With its mild, slightly sweet flavour, Bok Choy is a delicious and versatile addition to home vegetable gardens.
Perfect for stir-fries, soups, steaming, noodle dishes and fresh salads, Bok Choy is quick-growing and easy to prepare. Both the leaves and crunchy stalks are edible, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking for fast harvests during Malta’s cooler months.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from partial afternoon shade during warmer weather.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering encourages tender leaves and crisp stalks.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 10°C–22°C. Excessive heat and temperature fluctuations can encourage premature flowering.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 20–30 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Pick outer leaves as needed or harvest the entire plant when the stalks are well-developed. Typically ready approximately 30–50 days after transplanting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to March, when cooler temperatures encourage healthy leaf and stalk development.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or containers with fertile soil and good drainage. Provide afternoon shade during warmer periods.
Companion plants: Lettuce, carrots, onions and radishes.
Common issue: Flea beetles and cabbage caterpillars may damage the leaves. Inspect plants regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary. Temperature stress can also cause premature flowering (bolting).
