Description
Chinese Cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis), known in Italian as Cavolo Cinese, is a popular Asian leafy vegetable prized for its tender, pale green leaves, crisp white ribs and mild, slightly sweet flavour. This fast-growing vegetable typically forms elongated, compact heads, making it an excellent addition to home vegetable gardens.
Perfect for stir-fries, soups, salads, steaming, pickling and traditional Asian dishes such as kimchi, Chinese Cabbage is delicious both raw and cooked. It grows particularly well during Malta’s cooler months, producing crisp, flavourful leaves.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from partial afternoon shade during warmer weather.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential for tender leaves and healthy head development.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–22°C. Excessive heat or prolonged cold stress can encourage premature flowering.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 30–40 cm between plants for proper head development and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when the elongated head is firm, compact and fully developed, typically 50–75 days after transplanting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to November, with further planting possible in late winter when temperatures are suitable.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or large containers with fertile soil and good drainage.
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, celery and aromatic herbs.
Common issue: Flea beetles, cabbage caterpillars and aphids may damage the leaves. Use protective insect netting when necessary. Temperature fluctuations and root disturbance can also encourage premature flowering (bolting).
