Savoy Cabbage – 12 Seedlings

Savoy Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. sabauda), known in Italian as Cavolo Verza, is a popular leafy vegetable recognised for its beautifully crinkled, deep green leaves and compact, rounded heads. Its tender texture and mild, slightly sweet flavour make it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.

Perfect for soups, stews, stir-fries, stuffed cabbage rolls and traditional Mediterranean dishes, Savoy Cabbage is a versatile and nutritious vegetable. It grows particularly well during Malta’s cooler months and develops tender, flavourful leaves.

🌱 Growing Instructions

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, particularly during head development.

🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.

🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 10°C–20°C. Tolerates cool winter conditions and benefits from Malta’s mild winters.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 45–60 cm between plants for healthy growth and proper head development.

🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.

✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when the head feels firm and has reached a suitable size, typically 80–120 days after transplanting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)

Best planting season: September to February, for growing during Malta’s cooler months.

Position: Sunny vegetable gardens or raised beds with fertile soil and good drainage.

Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, celery and aromatic herbs.

Common issue: Cabbage caterpillars and aphids can damage leaves. Inspect plants regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary.
