Description
Hybrid Sparacello Sprouting Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is a productive broccoli variety valued for its vigorous growth and abundant tender flowering shoots. Unlike traditional broccoli grown mainly for one large central head, Sparacello produces smaller broccoli florets and branching shoots that can be harvested progressively.
Popular in Sicilian and Mediterranean cuisine, Sparacello Broccoli has a delicious, mild, slightly sweet flavour. It is perfect for sautéing with garlic and olive oil, pasta dishes, soups, steaming and stir-fries. Its ability to provide repeated harvests makes it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering encourages tender shoots and healthy growth.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–22°C. Cooler autumn and winter temperatures encourage healthy growth and good-quality flowering shoots.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–60 cm between plants for healthy branching growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest the tender flowering shoots while the buds remain tightly closed. Continue picking developing side shoots to encourage further production. The first harvest generally occurs around 70–110 days after transplanting, depending on the hybrid and growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to November, allowing plants to grow and produce shoots during Malta’s cooler months.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens or raised beds with fertile soil, good drainage and sufficient growing space.
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, celery and aromatic herbs.
Common issue: Cabbage caterpillars and aphids can damage leaves and developing shoots. Inspect plants regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary.
