Cat Tips for Winter

How to Keep Your Kitty Safe and Warm All Winter Long

Any cat owner can tell you that cats are heat-seekers. If there’s a warm spot to be found, your cat will find it, whether it’s a sun-puddle, a windowsill, or a fresh pile of laundry straight from the dryer. Cats are creatures of comfort, and the most comfortable cat is a warm cat. Here are some tips to make sure your cat stays happy throughout winter.

How do I make sure my cat is warm enough?

Cats crave warmth and they know where to look for it. Create a few warm nooks around your home that your cat can enjoy. Make sure that sunny windowsill is draft free, put carpets under their beds or pillows and where they feed. It’s helpful to keep their paws off the cold floors.

If you want to make use of any electric blankets or heating pads, make sure they are designed for pets to keep them safe. If you have open fires, use a fire screen to keep sparks away and keep your cat at a safe distance at the same time. You should not leave your cat next to an open fire without supervision.

Keep your cat warm and dry

If your cat goes outside and gets wet, gently dry them off with a towel to help them warm up quicker. Make sure you give them a warm space and some cuddles away from any drafts. This is especially important for older cats as they can get arthritis just like humans.

Are my cats eating too much?

Feline obesity is a serious health concern. It’s difficult to tell if a cat is eating a lot due to hunger, or simply out of boredom. Cats sleep more in winter, it’s cosy and warm, so they might get more bored than usual. Making time for play is important in winter to keep your cat entertained. However, studies have shown that cold weather can increase the appetites of both indoor and outdoor cats. Nevertheless, your cat is an individual. So check with your vet to find out how to maintain your cat’s optimum weight and health in any season. And remember, a balanced, quality diet will produce a healthy, thick coat…all the better to keep him warm.

Know when to seek help

Make sure to always seek advice from a vet if you notice any strange behavior or new habits to remove any doubt. Pets can get sick too, just like us, it’s important to keep them healthy as much as possible for a long and happy life.
